The Best Of Cartier’s Fine Watchmaking

The Astrotourbillon celestial tourbillon movement, which was introduced last year, was developed by Cartier Workshop for five years, and has now become the source of power for the Calibre de Cartier watch series. This unique timepiece has a large diameter to offset its weight with extremely lightweight titanium, and the surface of the case and movement are carefully modified. This watch is the best of Cartier’s fine watchmaking, limited to 100 pieces.
The 9451MC movement has a tourbillon frame with multiple escapement wheels and balance springs. Like a traditional tourbillon, this frame is driven by a third gear in a gear transmission system. The escapement wheel system relies on the escapement pinion to rotate around the fixed second hand gear (the fourth gear in the gear transmission system). However, this astronomical tourbillon called Astrotourbillon is unique and unique because of its several unique characteristics.

First, its frame is located in the center of the movement, so a special axis of rotation is required. For this reason, from the dual barrel of the movement to the display of the hour and minute hands, the entire gear transmission system must be redesigned. Secondly, the balance wheel and escapement of the Astrotourbillon celestial tourbillon are not set on the frame rotation axis, but on one side of the frame, which is aligned with the center of its rotation axis. It is this special design that creates a unique visual effect for the watch. Finally, the entire tourbillon frame is located above the movement in the middle of the two dials, instead of being directly integrated with the movement like a traditional tourbillon.

The central design of this tourbillon is unprecedented, and it has the dual effects of aesthetics and technology. Visually, the slender frame rotates around the entire dial every minute, and the eccentric balance bridge is designed in the shape of an arrow to indicate the number of seconds. Technically, to ensure the balance of the frame, a platinum balance weight was added on the other side of the frame, hidden under the central dial. In order to effectively control the inertia generated during rotation, the weight of the frame must be limited (the total weight of the frame is 0.39 grams, excluding the weight of the balance weight). Therefore, lightweight titanium is used as the material of production.

The 9451 MC movement developed in 2010, with a new case of 47 mm in diameter, provides a suitable frame for innovative technology. Titanium’s lightweight texture gives the watch strength and agility, and it is further enhanced by wearing. The four lugs extend downward to cover the wrist, which is fully ergonomic and gives the wearer a natural comfort. In addition, the double shoulders of the watch are sanded and polished, which not only makes the watch’s delicate contours more prominent, but also protects the octagonal crown from external forces, thereby ensuring the watch’s precise performance. All these details fully demonstrate Cartier’s strict requirements and extraordinary creativity for the watch. The eye-catching oversized Roman numeral XII on the dial fully expresses the masculinity in Cartier’s style. A series of semi-circular decorations are exquisite and exquisite, which further sublimate the brand’s mark and make the watch fully display the vitality of the 21st century.
