Conston Celebrates Ten Years Of Classic Heartbeat Movement

On May 14, 2014, Frederique Constant held a grand celebration at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices in Geneva to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the brand’s own production movement. Since 2004, Frederique Constant has launched watches with self-made movements. The movements are developed, manufactured and assembled by the brand, and are made by hand.
 After successfully launching its own heartbeat movement in 2004, Frederique Constant adds new members to the collection every year. The features of this series of watches still remain, such as the signature cut-out window on the dial, which is perfectly placed at 6 o’clock in the center of the dial. Every year, Frederique Constant adds new design concepts to the collection and repeats them. Frederique Constant Heartbeat series will continue to strive for excellence in technology and design, and strive to make breakthroughs.
 The heartbeat watch with its own heartbeat cutout window at 6 o’clock on the dial. The spinner is placed in front of the movement and is a patented design of Frederique Constant. Through the hollow back of the watch, you can admire the finely polished movement.
 Frederique Constant’s independent spirit gives us a lofty vision of watchmaking. Starting with the launch of the brand’s signature heart-beating in-house movement in 1994, we have developed 15 hand-made in-house movements, including our latest work: FC-942 The Heart Beat Manufactured In-House Silicon Movement ) To improve stability, durability, and technology.
 In the past two years, Frederique Constant’s research and development department has been devoted to designing, developing and upgrading 143 components of the watch. Today, it can successfully use the most advanced materials in technology to successfully create a new heartbeat own movement watch.
 To celebrate the anniversary of the watch series, Frederique Constant is pleased to introduce its own commemorative series of movements: the new heartbeat silicon movement, the case is available in two styles: 18K rose gold limited 188 pieces, platinum limited 18 Pieces, and the latest ultra-thin self-made tourbillon with green dial, limited to 10 pieces in 18K rose gold and 10 pieces in stainless steel.

Technology improvement
 The accuracy of any mechanical watch depends on the accuracy of the chronograph, which consists of a balance wheel, balance spring and escapement wheel. The balance wheel swings back and forth at a frequency of 4Hz, which is the key to affecting the accuracy of the watch.
 The escapement wheel is mainly responsible for swinging and stopping the spring of the spring, which has caused considerable friction in the history of watchmaking. The power of the gear mainly comes from the mainspring. Before the tooth pattern is tightened, it actually slides along the ratchet teeth. This is the friction of starting the anchor wheel. In other words, it needs proper lubrication balance, that is, oiling.
 The ticking sound of the Frederique Constant watch originates from the sound of the balance spring and the escapement teeth. In fact, all the ratchet teeth are made of hard and smooth stone, even at these heights. The sturdiness and sanding are also necessary for the oiling process of the watch. Oiling protects the escape wheel from damage caused by component friction. But as the lubricant fades and dries, the degree of friction increases, and it fails to deliver enough energy to the critical balance wheel.
 Unless the escape wheel can be properly oiled, it will be damaged to some extent and metal parts will need to be replaced. Now the reliability of the watch is improved, mainly because the escapement is lubricated with a better oil. To maintain the best function of a mechanical watch, it is generally necessary to clean and re-oil the watch every 4 years.

Silicon (Silicium) components
 Silicon is a chemical element. In the periodic table, its chemical symbol is Si and its atomic number is 14. Silicon is a tetravalent metalloid. Its properties are similar to carbon, but its chemical properties are more stable. Silicon is mainly found in rocks, gravel, dust, and so on. It is also found in silicates (minerals containing silicon, oxygen, etc.), such as feldspar. Silicon is the main material of semiconductor devices and can be used to make glass, ceramics, concrete, etc. Silicon is widely used as a semiconductor material. Compared with Germanium, which is also a semiconductor, the temperature is higher, and the natural oxides that are more likely to generate silicon in the furnace tube are better than most other materials Semiconductor. Crystalline silicon is dark gray, shining like a glass, but harder than glass.

Silicon escapement
 Making silicon escapement wheels requires a new technology with extremely high accuracy-Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE). The image of the escape wheel is first projected on a silicon wafer with a diameter of 100 mm and a thickness of only 0.5 mm. The size of the silicon wafer is generally from 1 inch (25.4mm) to 11.8 inches (300mm), and the thickness is 0.5mm. . Silicon wafers are usually cut from semiconductor boules using a diamond saw or diamond cable saw, and then polished on one or both sides. A 100mm silicon wafer can make about 250 escapement wheels.
 The image of the silicon escape wheel is projected onto the wafer first, and then the exposed enamel layer is removed, leaving the unexposed part of the wafer, and then the unexposed enamel layer will be etched by plasma to the isolation layer. The escapement wheel made of silicon is completed from an isotropic etching process. After finishing, you only need to clean the surface of the gear a little, all the finished products are exactly the same, no balancing, concentration and polishing are needed. Therefore, wafers are extremely important for the friction of Frederique Constant silicon escape wheels.
High-tech silicon escape wheel, with the same three-dimensional structure as diamond, light weight, high hardness, and corrosion resistance, so it is not necessary to use lubricating oil on the meshing surface of the gear; at the same time, it has good friction performance and reduces friction , The optimal box replaces the existing metal material to achieve the highest efficiency of the escape process.

Advantages of silicon escape wheel

Run without oil
1. Eliminate the problem of lubricating oil fading and drying.
2. The escape wheel is not oiled, which avoids the risk of the lubricant contaminating other components of the movement.

Extremely lightweight (low inertia)
Each movement of the watch pushes and stops the escape wheel. This lighter silicon escape wheel has lower inertia and is more energy efficient.

Good friction performance
Reduce friction and energy consumption, and reduce the energy required for the movement.

 Since the silicon escape wheel used in the Heartbeat’s own movement watch is not oiled and its weight is reduced, compared with the ordinary lever escapement system, it improves energy efficiency and maintains amplitude more effectively.

 Heartbeat’s own movement watch and silicon escape wheel are members of Frederique Constant’s own movement series. The balance of the heartbeat’s own movement is placed in front of the movement. The silicon escape wheel can be admired from the hollow hollow jumping window on the dial. The careful design will definitely attract everyone’s attention. The new heartbeat silicon movement watch has a stainless steel case with a diameter of 42mm. The sapphire crystal case back of the watch is exquisite and pleasing to the eye. This is the first Frederique Constant watch with silicon escapement. The 18K gold case and stainless steel case are produced in limited editions of 188 and 1888 respectively.
